What is a top hat potty? (and how the Potty Plane is different)

If you've been researching newborn potties, you've probably come across the phrase "top hat potty." It's exactly what it sounds like: a small potty shaped a little like an upturned top hat, designed to be held so you can catch your baby's wees and poos from the very early weeks. It's the classic tool of elimination communication, and parents around the world have used it for generations.

So why does the Potty Plane exist?

Because the classic top hat potty, honestly, isn't very comfortable, for you or your baby. It's a plain cup with nothing to hold it steady, so you're balancing it between your knees, holding your baby, and hoping nothing spills, all at once. We thought newborn pottying deserved better.

The Potty Plane is our reimagined top hat potty. It has wings that rest on your thighs so it sits steady and hands-free, a gentle backrest so your baby is supported, and a front splash guard to keep things tidy. Same simple idea, far kinder design.

Is it just for newborns?

While it's made to work from the very first weeks, plenty of families use it right through the early months as their everyday potty. It's light enough for the nappy bag and wipes clean in seconds.

The short version

A top hat potty is the traditional tool for early potty training and EC. The Potty Plane is that same idea, made properly, so starting with a newborn actually feels doable.
